ORANGE GROVE MIDDLE SCHOOL ELECTIVE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS 24-25

Course offerings subject to change based on space, availability, staffing, etc… Some courses may be offered as a semester or a yearlong course.

Advanced Band

This course focuses on enhancing student performance by studying challenging band music. It aims to improve instrumental skills, ensemble playing, and familiarity with advanced band repertoire. Students explore various aspects of the arts such as perception, creativity, history, and critique where applicable. *Previous band experience is required.

Beginning Band

This course focuses on helping students excel in playing woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. It teaches fundamental techniques for accurate and high-quality music performance, including reading notation. Additionally, it enhances students' comprehension of musical elements as they apply to the pieces they play. Many school instruments are available for students to use.

Beginning Choir (NEW)

Students will be instructed in basic musicianship and fundamental vocal techniques using introductory singing materials. This may be a performing group, in which attendance at all rehearsals and performances will be required unless prior approval has been granted.

Art

Beginning Art is an introductory course designed for students with limited or no prior art exposure. It introduces them to the fundamentals of art elements and design principles using various basic art materials like pencil, crayon, ink, paint, paper, and clay. The course also explores the historical and cultural influences of art and its significance in society.

Introduction to Spanish

This middle school course introduces Spanish language and culture for beginners, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students will learn basic categories such as colors, food, body parts, greetings, numbers, months and days of the year. It emphasizes communication through meaningful activities and enhances cultural awareness with various activities. This course is for beginners; not recommended for native Spanish speakers.

Leadership/Associated Student Body (ASB) *Application Required

This class is for students elected by their peers to the Associated Student Body Cabinet, as well as those appointed to non-elected positions. It emphasizes school pride, service, responsibility, good citizenship, and building character. Law

Enforcement Academy (LEA) *This course may not be repeated*

Prepares highly motivated young men and women for careers in Law Enforcement, the military, and other public service related fields. The students will be provided with opportunities to explore the broad range of careers within the field of criminal justice; to understand the relationship between academic achievement and success in the workplace; and to develop skills necessary to make well informed career choices. Also, the students will be provided with the opportunity to attain optimum health and physical fitness by learning about nutrition, along with strength and cardiovascular training. C-

CSTEM

The C-STEM program offers students a chance to dive into Computing, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (C-STEM) in an academic setting. They tackle real-world problems and craft their own computer programs. With inquiry-based learning, students blend computing into their studies. This opportunity comes through a partnership with UC Davis, but spots are limited Media Tech Calling all makers. In this elective class students will explore computer science through coding, creating computer games, applying design technology to build 3D printed creations. Robotics

This course is an introduction to robotics, using Lego Mindstorm kits, Robolab software, and Lego Robotics materials. Students will learn basic programming and problem-solving skills. The main goal is to engage students in building and programming a LEGO Mindstorm robot in teams. Topics covered include motor control, gear ratios, sensors, logic, decision-making, and propulsion systems. STEAM STEAM is an introductory engineering course that's hands-on and project-oriented, designed for students skilled in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. It integrates these disciplines through project-based learning, problem-solving, and research, offering insights into STEAM careers.

Office Aide/Teacher’s Aide (7th & 8th grade ONLY; GPA of at least 3.0 is required

This course provides students with hands-on office experience and skills such as alphabetizing, filing, record-keeping, and using phones in on-campus office settings

Drones - NEW (7th and 8th Grade ONLY)

In this introductory course, students learn and develop technical skills and apply principles related to designing, building and testing drone devices.
